Epictetus was a disabled Greek philosopher who lived from 55 to 135 C.E. He was born a slave in present day Turkey and lived in Rome. He studied philosophy under Musonius Rufus. He eventually gained his freedom and became an influential teacher of philosophy in his own right. His discourses were transcribed and compiled by his pupil, Arrian.
