Hooker Lake

Gorgeous wispy clouds floating high above Mount Cook and the Hooker Valley. The clouds here were crazy in the way they can only be in the mountains.

The Hooker Valley Track is one of the best half-day walks in New Zealand. Not only is it an easy, relatively even walk on a gravel path, but you get amazing views of the Southern Alps for your entire trip -- and that view constantly changes, sometimes including glacial lakes, other times including rushing river rapids, and most times including Mount Cook/Aoraki, the tallest mountain in New Zealand. It's unbelievable how blue Lake Pukaki is from afar...but once you actually stand in the lake, as I was doing here, it's so clear it seems that you can see for miles underwater.

An early morning 6km ride from Fox Glacier was well worth it to beat the crowds and get this perfect reflection of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Who would have thought this area gets 4m of rain a year and is normally under heavy clouds?

My second accidental Christmas in New Zealand was celebrated in and around Mt Cook village. We started things off with a quick visit to Tasman Glacier view point. Considering I thought it would just be a flat braided river with a bit of snow in the distance I was totally blown away by the view! This is painted hiding under a rock for shade while having good chats with a DOC worker.

Red Tarns is a quick steep walk from Mt Cook/Aoraki Village and to be honest... in the weather we had coming in, it was a big puddle with some red plants in it! The real gem came when I spotted a trail heading even higher over the ridge line. The view over the back to the Tasman River valley is hands down one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. This was painted at home after our trip because at the time we were being chased off the hill by a rain storm!

Since we didn't have any set plans for this day -- except for driving to our next apartment -- we took the long way around, meaning we took a random road we found up the east side of Lake Pukaki (the main road to Mount Cook goes up the west) and drove until we felt like turning around. We found plenty of isolated spots along the lake and only had to share them with a few other people. This view was my favourite, even if it meant climbing up a large boulder with a bunch of rather worried family members looking on!
