Demeter was the great Olympian Goddess of agriculture, grain, and bread. She also presided over the foremost of the Mystery Cults in the Ancient World, which promised its followers the path to a blessed afterlife. Demeter was depicted as a mother, often crowned and holding sheafs of wheat and/or a torch. She was known as Ceres to the Romans.
