Description: You may look at a black lager in a pint glass and shout “stout!” or “porter!” And that’s a fair mistake, considering you can only tell so much from looking at a beer. But what differentiates a Black Lager from other dark beers, especially stouts and porters, is a relatively lighter body, with roasty dark notes from the malts stopping well short of any stout-level depth. Fewer fruity esters play in the roastiness since this is a lager style beer. Instead, hops step in and provide an assertive but pleasant bitterness. Referred to as “Schwarzbier” in Germany (literally “black beer”) and American Black Lager in the U.S., it’s a good option for depth without as much body, dark and mysterious but still refreshing and quenchingly dry.

Description: Yebisu Beer had become a household name in Tokyo as a hugely popular Kanto region beer, but in 1903, when the Sapporo Beer Tokyo Brewery began shipping Sapporo Beer, volume was 30% lower than the year prior. Not only had Nippon Beer handed its long-held crown to Osaka Beer, but it was edged out by Sapporo Beer, too, falling into third place. Nippon Beer had suffered a devastating blow, and president Kyohei Makoshi met with Sapporo Beer chairman Eiichi Shibuzawa and Osaka Beer president Komakichi Torii to debate forming an alliance with the Russo-Japanese War on the horizon.
Description: Beer has a long history in what is now the Czech Republic, with brewing taking place in Břevnov Monastery in 993. The city of Brno had the right to brew beer from the 12th century, while Plzeň and České Budějovice (Pilsen and Budweis in German), had breweries in the 13th century. The most common Czech beers are pale lagers of the pilsner type, with a characteristic transparent golden colour, high foaminess, and lighter flavour. The Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita in the world.
Description: The craft beer landscape has changed dramatically in the past few decades, but one important tool, the Beer Flavor Wheel, has remained relatively unchanged since its inception in 1979—until now. All five senses are utilized in the appreciation of beer, but the way it tastes, smells and feels are arguably the most important contributors to flavor—and also the most elusive to describe.
Description: As far as Albany goes, we do know that Prussian-born Frederick Hinckel and Bavarian-born John Hedrick both opened breweries in Albany in 1852, the earliest Central European immigrant-owned breweries in the city. What we don't know is if those breweries opened as ale breweries or lager breweries. They may have been brewing Bavarian-style Weiss Bier. As the 1850s wore on, circumstantial references to lager brewing in Albany appears, but nothing noting a named brewery. In 1857, Templeton's—a furniture store on Albany's main drag, Broadway, advertised refrigerators for sale. Suitable for, as the ad expresses, "Grocers, Butchers, and Lager Beer purposes."
Description: The first Lucky Lager brewery was established by the General Brewing Corporation of San Francisco on August 31, 1933. Lucky lager was produced for decades in various locations long after the original San Francisco brewery closed up in 1978, though their California roots could still be found in their slogans, including the "It's Lucky When You Live in California" that was a common sight throughout the golden state on billboards. This design is based on their 1970s logomark which is quite similar to that of another west coast favorite, Rainier Beer, not just in it's red and gold color, but it's stylized, oversized 'L' and overall layout.
Description: The first light-tasting ale introduced in Canada, Labatt 50 was Canada's best-selling beer until 1979 when, with the increasing popularity of lagers, it was surpassed by Labatt Blue. Specially-selected North American hops and a good balance of dryness, complemented by a fruity taste, provide Labatt 50 with all the distinguishing features of a true ale.

Description: The Duquesne Brewing Company was officially incorporated on April 4, 1899. The first president was Henry Miller, formerly a furniture salesman. The original trademark of the brand was a depiction of Fort Duquesne (though it actually featured a depiction of the Fort Pitt Blockhouse with the words "Fort Duquesne" underneath it), and the more recognizable "Prince of Pilsners" trademark was added later. The brewery decided to use refrigerated train cars to ship the beer, an innovative move in the early twentieth century. A Chicago stockyard man, Max Epstein, connected Duquesne with Armour and Company, and had Duquesne's company logo emblazoned on one of the cars. At first sight, the Duquesne reps thought the car was a giant billboard...
