It was this Crucifix that Francisco heard said, in the small and abandoned church of São Damião: – “Francis, go and rebuild my Church“. An unknown Italian artist painted it in the 12th century on a cloth glued to walnut wood. It is 1.90 m high, 1.20 m wide and 12 cm thick. This is the Crucifix and the glorious Christ that Santa Clara would contemplate throughout her life, during the entire time she spent in the Monastery of São Damião (1212 – 1253). That is why he will speak so often of the “King of glory”.

This portrait of Atisha, among the oldest preserved, shows him as an enlightened being with golden skin and a halo, seated on an elaborate jeweled throne. His right hand is held in the teaching gesture and he holds a bound palm-leaf manuscript in his left.

Early February in the churchyard of St Laurence Church in the village of Tidmarsh, West Berkshire. A carpet of snowdrops is starting to flower next to the pathway leading to the south porch. This lovely old C12th church has a superbly decorated Norman doorway within the porch; a Norman font, C13th lancet windows - two with the remains of medieval wall paintings and some rare floor tiles. The image has a pencil art finish.

This is an image of the Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle in the city of Wells, Somerset, England. There are many cathedrals in England dating back to medieval times, but this is described as being the first that was built in a purely gothic style. Apparently, construction stated in 1175 and continued into the 1400s. It's strange to think that there were people who toiled for years to build this remarkable edifice but in their lifetimes they were not able to see it completed. Even so, it remains as a symbol of faith to all who worked in its construction, they were truly craftsmen.

I didn't have a lot of time, but while visiting Wells, the smallest city in England, I did have a quick look around the wonderful Cathedral Church of St Andrew the Apostle. Once inside I was taken by the the remarkable Saint Andrew's Cross that sits within the criss-cross of an arch that separates the nave from the choir. I did read that the arch was an afterthought as during construction it was realised that there was some instability in the walls. As afterthoughts go, this provided a most graceful solution to the problem. As I read further, it seems that construction of the cathedral started in 1175 and continued into the 1400s, which makes me think that most of the people who toiled here to build this place never saw it complete.

This image was captured within the ruins of the Banteay Kdei Temple, in the Angkor Archaeological Park, near Siem Reap, Cambodia. The tower is one of several at the site. Looking at the way the walls and towers were constructed, it would appear that the sandstone blocks were mounted in place and then carved as needed.
