Embedded in the side of a cliff, Hawker's Hut (Morwenstow, North Cornwall, England) was built by the somewhat eccentric vicar of Morwenstow, the Reverend Robert Stephen Hawker. Hawker (born 1803) was vicar of Morwenstow from 1834 until his death in 1875. The hut overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and was built from driftwood and timber retrieved from shipwrecks. A scholar and poet, Hawker used the hut as a retreat to write his poetry and to keep an eye on the coastline for ships in distress. During his time at Morwenstow, he made a point of offering shipwrecked mariners washed up on the shores of the parish a decent Christian burial.
