I go to a watercolour class on Wednesday mornings whenever I can. At one particular session, we had a number of antiques to choose from. I fell in love with a lovely antique toaster, and was very happy with the resulting watercolour. I sold it for about $30 to a friend, but afterwards, I wished I had kept it. Silly me. Getting all sentimental about a silly old toaster. LOL! The story has a happy ending, however. My friend, who had bought it from me, was willing to sell it back to me, even though she liked it herself... So my toaster and I have been reunited, never to be parted again. Text boxes circle the hemispheres of this atlas, an ornate golden border decorates the edges and a decorative scroll is at the top.

Abraham Ortelius was a Flemish cartographer and geographer, generally recognized as the creator of the first modern atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World). He is also believed to be the first person to imagine that the continents were joined together before drifting to their present positions. A beautiful ornate cartouche with the title Americae Sive Novi Orbis No Va Sescriptio is in the corner.

The double hemispheres feature the island of California and shorelines of western Australia and New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and includes Terra Esonis, the mythical land bridge which virtually connects Japan and California. The scenes surrounding the map are by Dutch artist Romeyn de Hooghe and represent the four elements. Fire is shown by war and destruction; air by the heavens; earth by harvesting and husbandry; and water by ships, a spouting whale and mermaids. There are groups of figures between the hemispheres and polar projection maps are above and below the atlas.

Like antiques? From weathervanes to antique model trains, this shop seems to have it all. I discovered this roadside antique shop in Quebec during a road trip. I was traveling through several small farming communities along the south shore of the St Lawrence River when I found this. It was full of antique metal art, toy trains, weathervanes and porcelain signs. This included old petrol signs popular with collectors of garage art.
