S. S. Kresge, founded in 1899, was a Detroit-born dime store where shoppers could find daily needs such as housewares, linens, clothing, school supplies, and toys. It was one of America’s top three variety store chains and had 742 stores by its 40th anniversary in 1938, primarily in the Midwest and eastern U.S. In 1962 Harry B. Cunningham president of Kresge, opened the first Kmart discount store in Garden City, Michigan. Kmart stores expanded nationwide, eventually replacing Kresge stores, the last of which were sold to the McCrory Corporation by 1987.

In 1984, Gold Circle was notable as the first major discounter to implement chain wide UPC barcode scanning. There was a total of 76 stores when the chain was sold and dismantled in 1988.

Founded in 1962 by the F. W. Woolworth Company, Woolco was an American retail chain. Unlike Woolworth's five-and-dime stores, Woolco was a full-line discount department store, and the creation of the new format coincided with the expansion of suburbia. At its peak, Woolco had hundreds of stores in the US, as well as in Canada and the UK. Woolworth's flagship stores were still doing well, but the company wanted to tap into the growing discount department store market without diluting its dominant position in the variety store business. The first Woolco was located in Columbus, Ohio, and by 1966, there were 18 in the US, and nine in Canada with plans for 30 stores to be added per year.

Before the other guys, there was TG&Y. Everything I owned came from there when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s.

Established in 1957, Stuarts (formerly "Stuart's") was a discount department store with stores throughout New England (though primarily in Massachusetts). At its peak, there were roughly 27 stores. Initially filing for bankruptcy in late 1990, the chain emerged a little under 2 years later with a second chance. Ultimately by mid-1995, the lack of updating their inventory & sales systems, along with management changes heavily lead to the final nail in the coffin for this chain.
