The annual Artichoke Festival began in 1959 as a harvest festival to celebrate California’s official state vegetable, the iconic artichoke. Castroville, California, which bills itself as the "Artichoke Center of the World," sees artichoke fans and foodies from around the world make their way to Monterey County each year, and the festival has grown so large that it has been moved out of the town, into a nearby convention center.

The New York Jazz Festival debuted on Randall's Island on August 24 and 25, 1956 with a similar design as this version. With a very ‘sketchy’ promotional graphics poster, in my opinion, this was the first Jazz festival in New York. The ‘fest’ was promoted with an 8.5 x 11 poor put together a booklet with this colorful design that today you can find it on sale on eBay. I designed my own taking the original concept and elevated it to a more eye appealing. The lineup back then included Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Dave Brubeck, Gerry Mulligan, Joe Williams, Erroll Garner, Gene Krupa, Coleman Hawkins. Louis Armstrong didn’t make it until next year.

Bluegrass is a genre of American roots music that developed in the 1940s in the Appalachian region of the United States. The genre derives its name from the band Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. Bluegrass features acoustic stringed instruments and emphasizes the off-beat. Notes are anticipated, in contrast to laid back blues where notes are behind the beat, which creates the higher energy characteristic of bluegrass. In bluegrass, as in some forms of jazz, one or more instruments each takes its turn playing the melody and improvising around it, while the others perform accompaniment; this is especially typified in tunes called breakdowns. This is in contrast to old-time music, in which all instruments play the melody together.
