Satellite Five was a space station in Earth orbit circa the year 199,909. It was a hallmark of the Fourth Great and Bountiful Human Empire, though the reputation that was built up about the satellite across time and space was not what it appeared to be. Satellite Five was deliberately framed in eyes of the public as an innocent technological vestige of humanity to turn their attention away from the ideas it could be subject to corruption, which let its controllers secretly manipulate Earth into a subservient dictatorship. It served as the centre of two major conflicts that threatened the welfare of the planet below, while the residents of Earth were never made aware of the truths behind the facade.

(Est. 1957, includes Volt Records and other subsidiary labels) Stax Records is synonymous with Southern soul music. Originally known as Satellite, the Memphis company was founded in 1957 by Jim Stewart and co-owned with his sister, Estelle Axton, and took its new name in 1961 from the first two letters of their last names. Among the many artists who scored hits on Stax and its Volt subsidiary during the Sixties were Rufus and Carla Thomas, Booker T. & the MGs (an interracial instrumental quartet that also served as the company’s rhythm section and house band), Sam and Dave, Johnnie Taylor, Albert King, and Otis Redding. Redding’s death in 1967 signaled the end of the first Stax era (to which Atlantic retains distribution rights).

This is an acrylic pour on canvas. I really love how the blues and greens fade into each other, creating a soft flowing image reminiscent of a view of Earth from high above.

Cocoa Beach was much, much edgier and zoomier in the late 50’s and throughout the 1960’s. Sure, there were hotels, restaurants, beaches, and bars (they called them lounges) back then just like now. But what they had 55 years ago was the raw excitement of the space program, engineers and space workers working crazy hours, and of course, the original seven astronauts roaring through Cocoa Beach in their Jim Rathman supplied Corvettes.
