USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) is the third United States Navy Nimitz-class supercarrier and is named after Carl Vinson, a Congressman from Georgia, in recognition of his contributions to the US Navy. The ship was launched in 1980, undertook its maiden voyage in 1983, and underwent Refueling and Overhaul between 2005 and 2009. Carl Vinson's callsign is "Gold Eagle". Besides deployments in Operation Desert Strike, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Southern Watch, and Operation Enduring Freedom, the Carl Vinson was involved in a number of notable events. The body of Osama bin Laden was buried at sea in 2011 from the deck of the Carl Vinson, and that same year, on Veterans Day, it played host to the first NCAA basketball game on an aircraft carrier, between North Carolina and Michigan State.

The Special Warfare Boat Operator rating was established on October 1, 2006. The Navy's computerized personnel system associates the rating name with an alphanumeric Navy Occupational Specialty (NOS) code. For SB, the NOS is E350. The Naval Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewman (SWCC) program evolved from the PT boats Sailors of WWII and the "Brown Water Navy" of Vietnam. They are specially trained to conduct and support Special Operations missions in a maritime environment and work primarily with Naval Special Warfare Sea, Air, and Land Teams (SEAL). The Special Warfare Boat Operator rating requires a 72 month (six year) enlistment obligation. Special Warfare Boat Operator class "A" school is broken into six phases and is in total approximately 62 weeks in duration. Phase One is eight weeks of Special Warfare Preparatory School located in Great Lakes, Ill. Phase two is three weeks of Special Warfare Combatant-craft crewman indoctrination; Phase Three is five weeks of Basic Crewmember Training; Phase Four is 21 weeks of Crewman Qualification training -- located in Coronado, California. Phase Five is 12 weeks of Initial Acquisition Training, and it is located in San Diego, California. The final phase is located in Stennis, Mississippi and is 13 weeks in duration -- it is advanced training in SWCC core skills. Special Warfare Boat Operator (NOS E350) Special Warfare Boat Operators support and perform maritime Special Operations in open ocean, littoral, and riverine environments. They provide maritime insertion and extraction of Special Operations Forces (SOF) and others. SBs possess unique skills in the operation, maintenance, and repair of specially configured combatant craft, and they operate small arms and crew-served weapons. They operate, maintain and repair tactical communications equipment, and use paradrop techniques to insert combatant craft. Other skills include small boat tactics, tactical ground mobility, trauma care, intelligence gathering and interpretation, and chemical/biological/radiological/nuclear defense measures. The Special Warfare Boat Operators also conduct direct action raids against enemy shipping and waterborne traffic.

Enterprise's home port was Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia as of September 2012. Her second home port was Naval Air Station Alameda until its closure in 1997. When in port at NAS Alameda, she was visible to those crossing the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge. She was the flagship of Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz while he lived in Berkeley, California until his death in 1966. Her final deployment, the last before her inactivation, began on 10 March 2012 and ended 4 November 2012. She was inactivated on 1 December 2012 and has undergone the 48 month inactivation process that rendered her unfit for further military service (inactivation removes fuel, fluids, furnishings, tools, fittings and de-energizes the ship's electrical system). Enterprise was officially decommissioned on February 3, 2017, after over 55 years of service, and with the completion of an extensive terminal offload program. She was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register the same day

From September 2003 to February 2004, the ship deployed to relieve the four carriers that were on station during the invasion of Iraq. Enterprise's role was to provide continued air support for Operation Iraqi Freedom. The fully repaired Cole was a member of her escort group at this time. A USO tour was held aboard while at sea, with WWE superstar Kurt Angle, NASCAR racer Mike Wallace, and comedian Robin Williams giving talks and performances. The ship made several port-calls to Jebel Ali, a stop in Bahrain (during which actor Ben Affleck visited the ship), and Naples, Italy and Cartegna, Spain on the way home. Admiral James Stavridis commanded the battle group at this time with Captain Eric Neidlinger as Enterprise's commanding officer. In April 2004, Enterprise participated in the Fleet Week celebration in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Enterprise's Damage Control team won the Damage Control Olympics at that event, setting several records in the process.[51] In June and July 2004, the ship participated in Summer Surge 2004 and several multinational exercises. She participated in photo ops of a multinational battle group and was anchored at Portsmouth, England on 4 July. USS Enterprise (CVN 65) Sailors of the Year appeared on the set of the Paramount Television series Enterprise to present the cast and crew with an American flag in 2003. The flag was flown in their honor as gratitude for the support the cast, and crew of the TV series have given the crew of the carrier. 2005 saw the ship in for another routine shipyard overhaul at Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. Departing the dock after this yard period, Enterprise ran through a sand bar, causing all eight reactors to shut down, leaving the ship adrift on emergency power for nearly three hours before she was tugged back to her pier at Norfolk Naval Base. It took approximately three days for the ship's nuclear machinists to clear her condensers of river mud[citation needed]. In May 2006, Enterprise departed for a six-month deployment, operating in the 6th, 5th and 7th Fleet areas in a world-tour, supporting Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, and visiting ports in Dubai, Hong Kong, and crossing the line. She returned to Norfolk 18 November 2006. On 19 December 2007, the carrier returned home after a six-month deployment in the Persian Gulf.

The birth of the Lithographer rating (LI) in 1948 was due to the realization that the technology of the time had eliminated the need for several specialized professions. Specifically, the new rating combined the rating of Printer, two service ratings in the Printer rating (Lithographers and Offset Process) and the Specialist rating of Photographic Specialist. Similarly, the Lithographer rating’s disestablishment in 2006 was the direct result of the transformation of printing and publishing not only through digital computer technology, but also the emergence of multimedia as the predominant method of information dissemination. For many people, the word “lithograph” conjures quaint images of Currier and Ives prints, but that was a far cry from what Navy Lithographers were producing by the time the 21st century had gotten under way. Sailors serving in the Lithographer rating used both lithographic and digital processes for replication of graphic and print documentation, and were well-versed in the capabilities of desktop publishing. Although they operated offset presses, they also worked with digital-duplication equipment and high-speed copiers. On one hand, they could handle process camera operations, a technology that was first employed in the 1890s; on the other, they were intimately familiar with electronic pre-press and publishing systems. As part of a move to make the Navy’s rating system more reflective of real-life media operations, the Lithographer rating was merged along with Illustrator Draftsman (DM), Photographer’s Mate (PH), and Journalist (JO) into newly established rating of Mass Communication (MC) Specialist. Although the conversion of Sailors in these ratings to the MC rating was automatic, Navy Lithographers and others who preferred not to continue their careers in the Mass Communication Specialist rating were given the opportunity to request lateral conversion to a Career Reenlistment Object 1 or 2 rating for which they qualified.

Description

The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II, the Korean War and other conflicts. The Mustang was designed in 1940 by North American Aviation (NAA) in response to a requirement of the British Purchasing Commission. The Purchasing Commission approached North American Aviation to build Curtiss P-40 fighters under license for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Rather than build an old design from another company, North American Aviation proposed the design and production of a more modern fighter. The prototype NA-73X airframe was rolled out on 9 September 1940, 102 days after the contract was signed, and first flew on 26 October
