Antoine Marie Joseph Artaud, better known as Antonine Artaud (French: [aʁto]; 4 September 1896 – 4 March 1948), was a French dramatist, poet, essayist, actor, and theatre director, widely recognized as one of the major figures of twentieth-century theatre and the European avant-garde. His fame was established in theatre, where he sparked lots of innovation and avant-garde quests, especially by defining the Theatre of Cruelty. He influenced Genet and Beckett and was involved in many actions that would determine the twentieth century in art. Artaud was a part of the surrealist movement, wrote poetry, acted in films, directed and produced theatre plays, wrote a script for the first surrealist film that influenced Bunuel and Dali, etc. He was everywhere, and he left a deep mark in our culture.
