Spring Express

The image is a black and white schematic of a bicycle patent illustration, numbered 356,095, granted on January 18, 1887. It displays four different figures (Fig. 1, Fig. 2, Fig. 3, Fig. 4, Fig. 5, Fig. 6, Fig. 7) showing various aspects and components of the bicycle design. Fig. 1 presents a side profile of the bicycle, showcasing the large front wheel characteristic of a "penny-farthing" design and a much smaller rear wheel. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the bicycle, providing a look at the alignment of the wheels and the seat. Fig. 3 to Fig. 7 detail individual components of the bicycle, such as the pedal mechanism and the gear system, highlighting the intricacies of its design. At the bottom, the name C. A. Bouke is listed as the inventor.

The penny-farthing, also known as a high wheel, high wheeler or ordinary, is an early type of bicycle popular in the 1870s and 1880s. Its large front wheel provided high speeds (owing to its travelling a large distance for every rotation of the legs) and comfort (the large wheel provides greater shock absorption). It became obsolete in the late 1880s with the development of modern bicycles, which provided similar speed amplification via chain-driven gear trains and comfort through pneumatic tires, and were marketed in comparison to penny-farthings as "safety bicycles" because of the reduced danger of falling and the height to fall from. The design is based on a popular '70s iron on, and is perfect for hipsters and cycling enthusiasts alike.
