This is part of my ongoing series about animals that went extinct after 1500. The Thylacine may be the most prominent example of a supposed extinct animal. Despite that the last known individual died in 1936 in a Zoo in Hobart/Tasmania, there have been sightings of this marsupial on Tasmania and even Australia where it is thought to be extinct for 3,000 years.

The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) is a carnivorous marsupial of the family Dasyuridae, now found in the wild only on the Australian island state of Tasmania, including tiny east-coast Maria Island where there is a conservation project with disease-free animals.

In every Tiger, there is a Cat wanting to be loved! Unfortunately Tigers are in danger. There are only around 3890 wild tigers left in the world. Since the beginning of the 20th century, we have lost over 95% of the world’s wild tiger population. For more information and how we can protect tigers check the wwf website: http://tigerday.panda.org/.
