The intent of Operation Guardian Support is to allow the Border Patrol to increase deterrence and border security capabilities while additional Border Patrol agents are trained at the academy. National Guard units will assist the Border Patrol with logistical and administrative support, aerial support, surveillance efforts, border-related intelligence analysis efforts, and mechanical support.

The New Jersey Army National Guard consists of over 9000 Guardsmen.The Guard is currently engaged in several worldwide and homeland missions. Units have deployed to Iraq, Guantanamo Bay, Afghanistan, Germany, Kosovo, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Egypt. The Guard has also deployed to help with the recovery from Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. The 39th Infantry Division (Delta Division) was an infantry formation of the Army National Guard, originally formed as the 18th Division in 1917. The division consisted of troops from Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. After training at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana, the division was deployed to France but did not see combat before the end of World War I. The 45th Fires Brigade is a modular field artillery brigade of the United States Army headquartered in Mustang, Oklahoma. It is a part of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. The unit was again redesignated 45th Fires Brigade in 2008 with the implementation of Army Transformation. The 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team ("Jersey Blues") was an infantry brigade combat team of the United States Army National Guard of New Jersey. It was headquartered at the Lawrenceville Armory. The brigade's lineage can be traced back to several different units starting with the 50th Armored Division. The 50th Armored Brigade existed up until 2007–2008 when the brigade was upgraded and converted to a brigade combat team under the Army's new modularity program. The force structure of the Brigade was changed in 2008 when the conversion to the 50th IBCT occurred. The 50th IBCT has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan for periods of up to a 1 year.
