A hand-drawn map I made of Anaheim, which I explored for my series, "California Fool's Gold," in 2015. It is the most populous city in Orange County and best known for being the home of Disneyland. Orange County is the third-most populous county in California and the sixth-most populous in the US. It was part of Los Angeles County until 1889. I drew this map around 2010.

Orange is a city in North Orange County. Unlike most of Orange County, it boasts a variety of attractive homes built in several eras and architectural styles. It is particularly notable for its Eichler tracts. This is a character I just designed for my friend, Nneka. I asked her to tell me what her favorite animal was. After thinking about it for a day she informed me that she couldn’t decide. So she told me to just make her a pine or wisteria tree instead. I moved to Southern California in 1999. I couldn't find a map of all of the communities and neighborhoods of Orange County. I set about making my own -- exploring the vast county on foot and mass transit. Along the way, I drew maps with ink and painted them in watercolors and oil paint -- or some combination (including correction fluid). As a lefty converted to a righty, my handwriting is terrible and my maps are sometimes hard to read when reproduced or reprinted -- and so I've made these clean, digital versions for people who prefer that sort of thing.
