The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) is a carnivorous marsupial of the family Dasyuridae, now found in the wild only on the Australian island state of Tasmania, including tiny east-coast Maria Island where there is a conservation project with disease-free animals.
This is part of my ongoing series about animals that went extinct after 1500. The Thylacine may be the most prominent example of a supposed extinct animal. Despite that the last known individual died in 1936 in a Zoo in Hobart/Tasmania, there have been sightings of this marsupial on Tasmania and even Australia where it is thought to be extinct for 3,000 years.
Happy Valentine's Day!
