The Arecibo message was broadcast by the the Arecibo radio telescope aiming at the globular star cluster M13 just once at a ceremony on November 16th 1974. Dr. Frank Drake, father of the Drake equation, wrote the message, with help from Carl Sagan. The message consists of a simple description of us, the civilization that sent it, as a means of communication with whomever could be hearing... 25,000 light years away.
