Based in Atlanta, I only got to visit a few times, but this place was really cool. Great selection and decent prices. I remember they were one of the first to really do used CDs too. Purchased by Blockbuster and turned into little more than a notch in the Blockbuster Music empire.

The famous Hollywood, CA record store chain. They were the first to offer listening booths so you could sample the music.

I liked Musicland OK. Their prices were outrageous, but they did have frequent rock t-shirt sales that kept me coming in, albeit infrequently.

I never liked Sam Goody, their selection and prices sucked. PLEASE NOTE there is some slight white bleeding/fading around the logo that will not go away.

I did my best to bring this dead logo from a mall icon of the 80s back to life with somewhat mixed results. Tape World met it's demise in the early 90s.

KIng Karol was once one of the most popular NY based record stores until its founder died in 1993 and had nowhere to go after that. What an awesome logo though!

This chain was definitely mostly mall based. I was always annoyed by their staff but impressed by their massive wall of cassette tapes and selection. I once bought a Weezer promo shirt for the original self-titled album there and I wore it all the time. They were a hot spot for cassingles here in the south during the early 90s country craze which I wanted no part of. I always preferred them to Sam Goody which was the OTHER music store in the mall.

Description

This was actually the first major record store chain in America. It once had hundreds of locations across 30 states, but originated in the Pittsburgh, PA area. It actually operated from 1937 - 2002. They must not have had any southeastern locations, because I never saw one.

Blockbuster entered the Music game in the 90s. Most were located in indoor shopping malls, but there were a few stand-alones as well. I have to be honest, I frequented this store in its infancy and could spend all day browsing. What was really cool, was that you could listen to any album in the store. My favorite album I ever purchased from there was by far, Smashing Pumpkins - Gish from the Gwinnett Place Mall location. I probably paid 18 dollars for it at the time. It was a little hard to find.

Description

The first Musicland store opened in 1955 in Minneapolis. The company expanded rapidly during the mall boom in the 1980s and continued to grow into the 90s, becoming the US's largest specialty retailer of entertainment products. In addition to Musicland the company also ran Sam Goody, Suncoast, OnCue, and the Media Play Superstore Chains. The Musicland Group was purchased by Best Buy in 2001 at the height of Musicland's success, and unfortunately led to its demise. By then, Musicland numbered over 1300 stores, but Best Buy failed to generate the results they were looking for, losing $85 million in 2002. They had failed at properly running The Musicland Group and as a result, they put the company up for sale. The Musicland Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2006.
