Macrophage Long Sleeve T-Shirts
Description: Macrophage engulfing TB bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a macrophage white blood cell (purple) engulfing a tuberculosis (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) bacterium (pink). This process is called phagocytosis. Macrophages are cells of the body's immune system. They phagocytose and destroy pathogens, dead cells and cellular debris.

Description: Macrophage engulfing bacterium. Artwork of a section through a macrophage (center) engulfing a bacterium (lower right). The macrophage cytoplasm (blue and purple) and cell membrane (green/blue) is seen here on the surface of the bacterial cell wall (green). Within the bacterium is its cytoplasm (purple) and nucleus (red and orange). At top right is the blood serum (yellow, brown). Macrophages are a type of white blood cell (leucocyte) which defend the body against invading micro-organisms. When a macrophage encounters a pathogen, it engulfs and destroys it, a process called phagocytosis. This image is the second of three, see also P276/201 & P276/203.

Description: Macrophage engulfing bacterium. Artwork of a section through a macrophage (center) engulfing a bacterium (bottom). The macrophage pseudopod is seen here extending over the bacterial cell wall (green) and flagellum. Within the bacterium can be seen its cytoplasm (purple) and nucleus (red and orange). Above is the blood serum (yellow and brown). Macrophages are a type of white blood cell (leucocyte) which defends the body against invading micro-organisms. When a macrophage encounters a pathogen, it engulfs and destroys it, a process called phagocytosis. This image is the third in a series of three. See also P276/201 & P276/202.

Description: Bacteria infecting a macrophage. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria (purple) infecting a macrophage white blood cell. The macrophage, when activated, will engulf (phagocytose) the bacteria and destroy them as part of the body's immune response. M. tuberculosis causes the disease tuberculosis. It infects the lungs creating primary tubercles, nodular lesions of dead tissue and bacteria. The bacteria may enter the blood or lymph systems and spread to other organs of the body. Tuberculosis is spread by coughs and sneezes.

Description: Brain cells. Illustration of three types of brain cells: astrocytes (red), pyramidal neurons (green), and microglia cells (blue). Pyramidal neurons are a type of nerve cell found in the cerebral cortex of the brain. They are so-named for their triangular cell bodies. Astrocytes are a type of glial tissue, and provide support and nourishment for nerve cells. Microglia are phagocytic macrophage white blood cells that are the main form of immune system in the central nervous system (CNS). A blood vessel and red blood cells (red, across right) are also shown.
Description: Asbestosis: false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing two macrophages impaled on an asbestos needle. Asbestosis is a lung disease (one of the pneumoconioses) caused by inhalation of asbestos fibres. Normally, foreign particles in the lungs are engulfed (phagocytosed) by the macrophages (mobile scavenger cells). Asbestos needles, however, are virtually indestructible and puncture the macrophages, destroying them and releasing their contents into the lung tissue. Asbestosis is linked with the development of mesotheliomas, cancers of the pleural membranes that surround the lungs. Magn: x2,000 at 6x7cm, x1,000 at 35mm size.
