I was in love with beautiful native birds while living in New Zealand. My favourite bird Tui habitats mainly in North Island. It's easily recognisable with not only a big white Adam's apple, but also Maori-trained clear and sharp voice.⁣

When the sound of thunder was heard, Native Americans believed it was the omen of war. They believed that the beating of the Firebird’s wings caused the thunder and stirred the wind. Since arrows were the main form of attack and defense by Native Americans, two arrows were the symbol of war. They were meant to mimic the arrows being thrown between two warriors.

Fantail/piwakawaka is one of the popular native birds in New Zealand. Despite its small body (about 11.5-21 cm long), they move around quite agilely while swinging the long tail that opens like a fan.

Tauhou is the Maori name for the Silvereye. This design features 3 Tauhou flying in formation. This Bird is designed with curving korus and curving colours which represent the true colours of the beautiful Silvereye. The silvereye, also know as Wax-eye (Zosterops lateralis) or White-eye, colonised New Zealand from Australia and is one of New Zealand’s widespread bird species. It is found throughout New Zealand. Silvereyes are small songbirds that are easily recognised by a white eye-ring; their feathers are olive-green above and cream below.

This is my interpretation of our gorgeous native bird, the Galah! They are bits of larikans and although I have exaggerated the pinkness of this bird, they are indeed, pink, white and grey. Love them.

Australian Native Bird - Kookaburra

I have a guilty pleasure, which is westerns and anything Native American. I also have a favourite Western artist called JD Challenger (google him) So I've created this mixed media piece in the style of JD Challenger, based on an old black and white photo of a Crow man named Swallow Bird, taken at the turn of the last century by Edward Curtis. I have painted pieces in this style before, but not for a good few years.

This unique design by artist Jeff Bartels features a flying bird inspired by Haida art. The Native pattern depicts a flying bird with its wings flowing back and tail hanging down below. This stylish design is a spiritual representation of this wonderful flying creature.

Fantail, a native bird of New Zealand, called Piwakawaka in Maori. I have drawn this using Koru designs based on unfurling fern fronds. This vector design is bold and simple. 2 shades of brown, and on some products, an earthy, light brown background.

This is the third in a series of Australian Native animal designs that were created from three photos taken by Karen McFarland. The iconic flightless native bird, the emu, National Emblem of Australia, is the first image which was first vectorised then placed onto the design with a sepia toned gradient. The second image, that of the other iconic native, the marsupial kangaroo, was also given the same effects.The other icon of the Aussie bush, the windmill, which was also vectorised then placed in the design with the same sepia gradient. The stunning sunset effect of the golden hour was created using the colors red, orange, yellow, brown and black in a gradient background layer.

BOOM! The Thunderbird beats its mighty wings as it streaks across the plains of North America. Thunder and wind are stirred up in its wake as it claps its wings together. Bolts of lightning flash from its eyes, arcing across the billowing black clouds, illuminating the path of its flight and sending children and animals fleeing in terror.
