En passant is a move found in chess wherein a pawn captures a horizontally adjacent opponent pawn that has just advanced two squares. "En passant" is a French word. The en passant rule was added in the 15th century alongside the introduction of the pawn's initial double-step move. This is a nice design for chess lovers and a good custom for a geeky event.

Passant Contourne' is a Heraldic term. Passant is standing w/ one of the fore feet raised, as if walking. It is traditionally the Right fore foot. Contourne' or sinister means facing the left. This would be the shield bearer's left, not the left of the person viewing the shield.
