Endemic Species Notebooks
Tauhou is a small bird that lives in the New Zealand forest. The European Name is Silvereye or Wax-eye. The bird in this print is drawn incorporating Maori Koru patterns. The koru (Māori for “loop”) is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. This design started life as a stencil which I made for a New Zealand birds mural. The mural is long gone but I still had the stencils. I redrew them, using vector, to create a series of bird designs. Others in this series are KIWI, TAKAHE, FANTAIL, TOMTIT and the ROCK WREN.

Fantail, a native bird of New Zealand, called Piwakawaka in Maori. I have drawn this using Koru designs based on unfurling fern fronds. This vector design is bold and simple. 2 shades of brown, and on some products, an earthy, light brown background.

The Takahe is a flightless bird which is indigenous to New Zealand. For 50 years the South Island Takahe was thought to be extinct, luckily that was wrong. If you have the time it is a great story of discovery, well worth googling. The North Island Takahe is extinct. This design uses Koru patterns. The koru (Māori for “loop” is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. The colours are, purple-blue, greenish and brown. I also have this design for sale with the text Aotearoa, rather than New Zealand.

The octtoids were a peaceful species that achieved world peace by exterminating all other sentient lifeforms that proved to egotistical to live side by side. They lived in harmony for about 40 centuries until one day a asteroid containing a parasitic tumor made its way into the octtoids home planet. The parsite then multiplied through asexual means and attached itself to the only lifeform available, the octtoids. The tumors would then push their own agenda by controlling the occtoids. It only took 2 winters for the tumors to destroy all that the octtoids built by being pathetic children and starting wars and exhausting all possible nonrenewable resources. The planet of the octtoids was lost.
