This was my first stop after scoping out the best spot to shoot Thor’s Well from when I came back later for high tide. It’s also where I got drenched by the first of 3 big waves that kept me soaking wet through my day of shooting on the Oregon coast. I shot dozens of exposures here until I got the perfect flow of sea foam ribbons as waves crashed into this dangerous fissure in the rocky cliff and furiously rushed back out to sea. Positioning myself and my tripod in the fissure was tricky and dangerous with the risk of sneaker waves, which is exactly what soaked me good before I landed this shot.

Original Olympic Peninsula graphic design by Eve Penman; featuring the names of the bodies of water surrounding the peninsula — Pacific Ocean, The Strait of Juan de Fuca, Hood Canal, Salish Sea, and Puget Sound — along with two landmarks, Cape Alava and Cape Flattery, written in the rays of a setting sun positioned in accordance with their geographic locations around the peninsula. Perfect for locals, travelers, and lovers of learning!

For a brief two hours, Pacific Rim turned me back into the child I used to be. The heroes had heart and the monsters were terrifying. I was sitting cross-legged in front of the tube again, watching Ultraman pound on the bad guy, fly away to recharge in the sun, and come back to pummel some more. I was a little older, wondering why Voltron didn’t just form his Blazing Sword at the BEGINNING of the fight. This design is for the kid in us, the kid who loved those big defenders and the gargantuans they danced with.
