The modern mall was invented at Southdale. On October 8, 1956, Southdale, the first fully enclosed, climate controlled shopping mall was opened with two anchor stores and 72 shops and restaurants. Southdale is now the oldest shopping mall in the U.S and currently has only one anchor, Macy's and approximately 120 shops. It is presently a Simon Mall so definitely not as grand as it was in 1956, but still a sight to be hold.
