The Knights Templar, or simply as Templars, was a military order recognised in 1139 by papal bull Omne Datum Optimum of the Holy See. Templar knights, in their distinctive white mantles with a red cross, were among the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades.

The Varangian Guard was an elite unit of the Byzantine Army, from the 10th to the 14th centuries, whose members served as personal bodyguards to the Byzantine Emperors. They are known for being primarily composed of Germanic peoples, specifically Norsemen and Anglo-Saxons.
