This work is infused with a powerful sense of heat, light and realism. It depicts a pub at the end of its functionality, basking in the sun, with what lies inside now a mystery, its future uncertain. The pub was in fact the location of the video "Red, Red Wine," by UB40 and is in Birmingham's Digbeth district. I have used my own photography to inform and inspire this work, which is executed in acrylic on a canvas frame.

Pictographs are paintings of shapes and figures, usually found on rock faces or inside caves. Note the term used… Rock Art. There are thousands of pictographs located throughout California’s many wild places. Some of the most famous, being from the Chumash in the Santa Barbara area. These works of art have been created by Native Americans, some as long as a thousands years ago. Most of the true meaning of the artwork has been long lost, generations ago. Scholars can only speculate on the significance of what the original artists were trying to say, document or describe. It was usually the Shamans, the spiritual leaders that created these images. It is believed that these pictures depicted the supernatural world, concepts or ideas.

I love these old subway cars, their colours, a turquoise hued metal, and red brown floors, little portholes to the outside, to the darkness of the labyrinth beneath the city, the domain of nightly ghosts and demons and perhaps the odd urban legendary crocodile or two. The car is empty, adding to its mystery, the end of the day perhaps, or the very beginning. The work is interesting and unusual, evocative of a different time and place. A perfect gift, a great addition to any collection of American works.

A ladder, seemingly to nowhere. I was reminded of Jacob’s dream whereby a ladder appears, a reminder of heaven above, and of the promise that exile will end. The tree, gnarled and ancient, also put me in mind of biblical gardens, of olives and jasmine, of hot desert winds, of red rocks that echo the howl of the jackal. The courtyard envelops us in shade, above a glorious sky of blue, and below the terracotta colours of the sandy walls. The tree is rich in olive and yellow hues, the wood almost pink.

Diner, Hull, England

A hidden corner that hugs the Water of Leith, on my way to the Botanical Gardens. A day of glorious Scottish sunshine, of a clear blue sky and gentle warmth. The stone radiates gold, brilliant white from the woodwork, with dots of yellow from sunflowers. It is quiet here, with Stockbridge a short walk away. The work is rich in realism and detail, filled with vivid colour; A wonderful souvenir of Edinburgh and a perfect gift.

What do doors represent? What lies behind, what memories, relationships, treasures and mysteries? In a Northern English town, where redbrick is replaced by stone, and where the road rises sharply, I spotted this lovely pink door. I wanted to capture its pastel, its oldness. The work is unusual and rich in atmosphere. A perfect gift and a great addition to any collection of architectural art.

Never Underestimate the Tenacious Power of a WildMan Who is Also A U.S. Veteran!

It is early on Sunday morning, and London has yet to wake up. I have Soho to myself. I love the green tiles of the shop front, the way the shadow draws me to the alleyway, mysterious and deserted. Windows draw me upwards, and I imagine what lies inside. It is Sunday morning in London and the day beckons with its promise of brunch, of designer coffees, of walks and friendship. The work is rich in detail, rich in colour too, with elements of realism that make it a great addition to any collection of London art.

A funny Geek Nerd checklist. A list where one might describe their personality, maybe for a dating site or similar. The term loser has been replaced with wild man.

I love looking at old houses with closed doors. What is inside? What mysteries beckon? The shutters look rusty, the door long since locked and forgotten, entombing ghosts and cobwebs maybe. But for others, we can see an opportunity perhaps, a fresh start, a chance to renovate, the bring back to the light and comfort and the cosiness. The light is strong, bouncing off the white wall at the side. The stone is aged, full of character. Flowers and grass push through. The French house, the abandoned house.

Taxis in New York City, USA

Deptford is one of those places that has been on the periphery of my life, most of my life. I used to wander here from Surrey Docks in the 1980s, and it was as vibrant and diverse then as it is now. Edgy, alive, exciting. I loved the colours and textures of these shops, so I painted them. The canvas is 0.4 inches deep. It can therefore hang without the need for framing if wished.

A famous and iconic Hull pub, filled with atmosphere, a place of ghosts and friendship. A lovely work that exudes Hull. An ideal gift, a wonderful souvenir. I have painted this scene before, but the pub, and what it stands for and what it reminds me of, continue to draw me.

A Mysterious Green Door In France

A very hot summer’s day in Upstate New York, a quiet town basks in the heat. A flag hangs silently in the breezeless afternoon. The light is pervasive, powerful, bleaching, purifying. Behind, a café where ice cool milkshakes and sodas await, a slice of peach or cherry pie if wished. The sky is blue, a few clouds scud by. A beautiful piece of American-themed art to add to a collection, or a wonderful gift.

On a sunny Sunday in Hull I wander down Prince Street, a lovely remnant of Hull’s Georgian old town. The cobbles beneath glisten, the stucco radiates the sun. It is a tranquil spot, perfect in symmetry, classical in style. The work is bright, naive, full of colour, an ideal gift.

Where the New Town starts to end and Stockbridge approaches, where the hills are steep and the shadows long, I noticed the beautiful play of light and colour on this golden building. It was a perfect design of symmetry, Georgian, solid, with fan windows over the doors, and built of large blocks of stone. It was a perfect Edinburgh morning, a day of Scottish summer promised and delivered, the air tinged with pine and heather and brine. I wanted to capture that light. The work is rich in colour and in detail, laced with a strong realism and solidity that make it a perfect souvenir of Scotland, an ideal gift.

Under a sky of light blue, the sky of a Parisian spring day, a corner building that imposes its shiplike prow. I imagine how it must be to live here, in a garret perhaps, with views over the city, climbing creaking wooden stairs, carrying a freshly baked baguette. Day dreams, and fantasy, longing and envy, as I explore the city. This work is rich in colour, in shadow and light. It makes a perfect addition to any collection, a great gift, the ideal souvenir of the City of Lights.

A long walk on hot streets, the smell of tar and London plain. On a corner, a pub, a play of shadow and light, of colour, blue sky and purple stucco. The bricks reflect the light, golden almost. Inside we can seek shade, refreshment, in dark shadow and cosy nooks. The work is rich in light, in gentle yet vivid colour, a wonderful souvenir of London, a great gift.

On the corner, a pub, late summer sun creating patches of light in windows; below, as usual, the street is frenetic but above calmness reigns. The work is full of London flavours and atmosphere, rich in colour and in detail. A great gift, a wonderful souvenir of this corner of London.
