As part of this concept, the 11th Aviation Command was first constituted on 1 February 1963 in the Regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 11th Air Assault Aviation Group, and assigned to the 11th Air Assault Division (Test). The unit was activated on 5 February 1963 at Fort Benning, Georgia. Under the leadership of Major General Charles W.G. Rich, the Test Director, and Brigadier General Harry Kinnard, the Division Commander, the group worked to formulate a unit that could move one-third of the division's infantry battalions and supporting units in one single helicopter lift.

On 1 July 1968, at Camp Eagle in the Republic of Vietnam, the 160th Aviation Group was constituted with elements of the 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment; the 101st Aviation Battalion (Assault Helicopter); the 158th Aviation Battalion (Assault Helicopter); and the 159th Aviation Battalion (Assault Helicopter). Less than a year later, on 25 June 1969, the 160th Aviation Group was redesignated as the 101st Aviation Group

In April 1965 the USA Aviation Brigade (Provisional) was activated with the existing in country 13th, 14th, 52nd, and 145th Aviation Battalions reporting to it. In August it became the 12th Aviation Group, which then doubled in size and was used to form the 1st Aviation Brigade in March 1966. The 1st Aviation Brigade, responsible for 40% of the Army’s helicopter assets and 100% of its fixed wing assets; performed brilliantly throughout the war and was instrumental in inventing and perfecting the art of helicopter warfare.

The 244th Aviation Brigade became a component of the 11th Theater Aviation Command when the command activated on 16 September 2007. At that time, a number of units which were formerly under the brigade were transferred away and several units within the brigade were reconsolidated. Until the transfer, the 244th Aviation Brigade was the largest aviation brigade in the United States Army and continues to be the only aviation brigade in the United States Army Reserve.

Reorganzied 19 November 1974; Headquarters and Headquartrers Company redesignated 227th Aviaiton Company and remainder of battalion inactivated at Fort Hood, Texas. 227th Aviaition Company reorganized and redesignated 21 May 1978 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 227th Aviaiton Battalion; concurrently, remainder of battalion activated at Fort Hood. Relieved from the 1st Cavalry Division, reorganized and redesignated 16 July 1987 as the 227th Aviation, a parent regiment under the United States Army Regimental System, with Headquarters at Fort Hood, Texas.

The United States Army Aviation Branch is the administrative organization within the United States Army responsible for doctrine, manning and configuration for all aviation units. After the United States Army Air Corps grew into the Army Air Forces and split into the new service, the United States Air Force, the Army was left with its sole fixed-wing aviation units flying L-2 observation planes for artillery units. The Army would develop a new concept of aviation using the helicopter that would show promise during the Korean War and would revolutionize warfare during the Vietnam War.
