Although brief, Ben Hall's career was prolific and intense. With danger around every corner he had to be on his guard at all times and we see him here during a shootout with the police.

At their peak, the Gilbert-Hall Gang was a force to be reckoned with, holding entire towns prisoner when the whim took them. Here we see Mickey Burke, John O'Meally, John Vane, Johnny Gilbert and Ben Hall as they would have looked at the height of the gang's infamy in the early 1860s.

Forbes was the scene in the 1860s of bushranging activities of the Ben Hall gang. The cemetery holds this grave of Ben Hall who was shot in 1865 aged 27 as well as the now unmarked graves of John Walsh, Ben Hall's brother-in-law who died in 1863 aged 17; John O'Meally, a member of Ben Hall's gang who was shot dead in 1863 aged 23; Billy Dargin, a police tracker who died in 1865 aged 22. Self-proclaimed "Prince of Tobeymen", Frank Gardiner was a kind of godfather of bushranging. Gardiner introduced the world to Johnny Gilbert and Ben Hall as well as pulling of one of history's largest gold robberies at Eugowra Rocks. His life was full of adventure and misfortune.

For months Frank Gardiner, The Darkie, had been plotting a big heist. He knew that the key to a big haul was to attack one of the gold escorts from the diggings but they would be heavily guarded so he would need to be able to overwhelm the security. So, as 1862 trundled along Gardiner built up a gang for his heist that could hardly be rivaled by any police escort. Among the men were Gardiner’s wingman Johnny Gilbert, Ben Hall, John O’Meally, Henry Manns, Alexander Fordyce, Daniel Charters, and John Bow . In that time Gardiner had been bouncing ideas around with Gilbert and O’Meally, finally devising a plan as winter set in.

Johnny Gilbert was the over the top Canadian bushranger that worked alongside Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall. His propensity for violence and love of frivolity and lawlessness led him to and early grave.

After the death of Sergeant Parry at Black Springs, the Hall Gang were wanted for murder. This reward notice was published in 1864 and signalled the beginning of the end for the bushrangers.

Sir Frederick Pottinger is a popular figure in bushranging history. A baronet who tried to hide his nobility by becoming a policeman, he earned the nickname "Blind Freddy" because he was so incapable of locating the bushrangers plaguing his district.

In the 1860s there was one man who was the nemesis of the New South Wales bushrangers - Sir Frederick Pottinger. A gambler, a dandy and a baronet, Pottinger became one of the most renowned frontier lawmen in Australia facing off against the likes of Frank Gardiner, Johnny Gilbert and Ben Hall.

One of the Lachlan's most dangerous bushrangers, John O'Meally was a member of the gangs of Frank Gardiner, Johnny Gilbert and Ben Hall. O'Meally was short tempered and quick to violence, with at least one death to his name. He met his end during a gunfight at Goimbla.

The youthful Dunn was an acolyte of Ben Hall and Johnny Gilbert and managed to outlive both of them. His impulsiveness and joy in the crimes the Hall gang committed led him to the receiving end of a noose.
