Wow, how different the Blue Lagoon looks under the night sky! Even though the aurora was not incredibly bright on this evening, I still love the combination of colours created by it and the light pollution from Keflavík nearby.

A tantalising hint of the aurora behind the clouds on Flakstadøya in the Lofoten Islands. Unfortunately these clouds were an ever-present part of our trip there so this was just about the closest we got to seeing the aurora. That said, there's no way we could complain, because Lofoten in January is one of the most stunning places in the world.

You cannot stop time from flowing, but what you can do is to live at your best

The sea crashes onto the rocks of the island of Hamnøya in the village of Reine. This was sunrise on my second-to-last morning in the islands, and it was by far the most memorable day of our trip. For two hours, the sun sat just above the horizon to the south and lit up the entire fjord in pink.

It's hard to believe that this was taken around 10am, but when you've got a blanket of smoke smothering you from a season full of wildfires, the world looks a little bit different. This was one of the worst weeks of smoke we experienced over the summer, and it happened to coincide with my only trip of the summer to Jasper. It made for a very different visit from my previous trips up there, and actually resulted in one of my favourite shots I've ever captured of Athabasca Falls.

Natural Bridge is a favourite of photographers across South East Queensland. This difficult-to-shoot scene, found in the Natural Bridge section of Springbrook National Park, is part of a very short bushwalk through the area, which takes you along Cave Creek, into the cave, and then up and over it. It's best seen when there has been a lot of recent rainfall; otherwise, it can slow to a faint trickle.

You're often told, when you head north to the Arctic Circle, that you'll need to get out of the city to see the northern lights properly. That's often true, as the light pollution blocks you from seeing the full strength of the aurora, but sometimes you're lucky enough to see a scene like this right behind your hotel. By the Sea abstract coastal photograph

A short walk downhill followed by bounding from rock to rock along the edge of a stream brought us to this view. Killen Falls wasn't running quite as strongly as it had just after the heavy rains, but it was still quite impressive...but I think the cascades pouring off the wall around the pool at the bottom of the falls might have stolen the show!

We weren't sure what we were going to get at Overlander Falls as we just blindly followed signs promising a waterfall (and got lucky enough to find another sign shortly after pointing out a closer parking lot before we embarked a 3-hour roundtrip walk). 15 minutes and a short descent later, we found a waterfall surrounded by winter wonderland and lit with the constant golden light that this time of year brings. It was perfection.

The Milky Way stretches across the sky above the Fingal Head lighthouse in northern New South Wales. We were lucky to be able to see the Milky Way at all, since it was intermittently raining in between patches of completely clear skies.

Brancaster is a village and civil parish on the north coast of the English county of Norfolk. The civil parish of Brancaster comprises Brancaster itself, together with Brancaster Staithe and Burnham Deepdale. The three villages form a more or less continuous settlement along the A149 at the edge of the Brancaster Manor marshland and the Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve. The wooden groins in this location are unusual in they zig-zag along the coast and are undated in age. canon 5D Mk3 24-105 L series lens

What good luck is this?! Of our three nights in Lake Tekapo, we were treated to pink southern skies for two of them. The aurora may not have been visibly dancing, but it was most definitely there! I thought I'd point out the Milky Way to everyone, just in case they couldn't find it :) Location: Somerset Dam, Queensland, Australia

After 10km of hiking through Paradise Valley -- a valley that truly lives up to its name, particularly in autumn, we reached the Giant Steps. This waterfall is breathtaking at any time of year, but the light frosting of snow and golden trees on the distant mountains made it even moreso. Even after two hours -- the most we could spare on our hike, since we still had Sentinel Pass to conquer -- we only saw a small portion of this area. I know which hike will be the top of my to-do list next summer!
