Malina is the Sun goddess of the Inuit people who live in Greenland and there is a story of how she and her brother came to be, but as a heads up, it's a little out there. Malina and her brother, the Moon-god Anningan, lived together and used to play games. But once adults, things changed. One night, while they were playing in the dark, Anningan forced himself on his sister. She ran as far as she could into the sky, where she became the Sun. Anningan, showing no remorse for his crime, continued to chase his sister in the sky where he became the Moon. This eternal race makes the Sun alternate with the Moon in the sky. But occasionally, the Moon-god reaches the Sun goddess and forces himself on her again, causing a solar eclipse.

Falling Down

I loved the contrasts and shades, the lime green, faded, retro, pistachio pudding, cream and custard, pealing, layers of memories and decades past. There is a sadness to Paddington. Perhaps it reminds me of childhood tales of abandoned bears, a memory of a never to return family holiday to Cornwall, sitting in a first class dining car with silver coffee pots and an English breakfast. Memories of a lonely and confusing first year at college, taking a late train back to a depressing suburb. Victorian buildings, hospital wards with broken windows and dirt encrusted window sills. A little corner of London. And yet the sky is blue, hot and bright. The windows reflecting blue, shadows gathering in the street below.

Under a sky of light blue, the sky of a Parisian spring day, a corner building that imposes its shiplike prow. I imagine how it must be to live here, in a garret perhaps, with views over the city, climbing creaking wooden stairs, carrying a freshly baked baguette. Day dreams, and fantasy, longing and envy, as I explore the city. This work is rich in colour, in shadow and light. It makes a perfect addition to any collection, a great gift, the ideal souvenir of the City of Lights.

Paris is a city of moods, and it is the sky that sets the tone. Why, there is even a famous film and song, "Sous le ciel de Paris" that reflects this. In Paris we look up. In this view it is the Eiffel Tower that catches our eye. I have always loved the shape and above all the colour of this most iconic of monuments. I have used a fairly restricted palette on the work and in some places left thin the layer of paint so that the rawness of the paper shows, a symbolic prying away of veils. The style is a fusion of naive and realist. I have painted Paris many times. It is a fascinating city, a place where I feel a sense of belonging, of history of wonder and of mystery.

In the Botanical Gardens is to be found the most perfect of Scottish gardens. Flowers and ferns, manicured lawns that remind me of the West Highlands, lavender and heather. Behind is a small house, transported brick by brick from elsewhere. It soothes me here, in this wonderful land of plants and make believe, tucked away behind high stone walls, a domain that existed before I was born and will live on after me. Fleeting memories come to me in the Botanical Gardens, from 50 years ago, of benches where adults sat whilst I deployed my toy soldiers on the flag stones, of wondrous walks through the mini jungles of Victorian hothouses. The work is rich in detail, in colour, and it makes a perfect addition to any collection, a great gift too.

One of the most prized views of the Tower, from an abruptly cut off road near the Trocadero. It is a popular spot for social media photos and selfies, and who can blame them? From here the Tower seems small, pocket-sized perhaps, the magic of optical illusion. The sky is warm, blue, wide, and the summer is here with its promise of freedom. The sandstone turns golden, the trees bloom with yellow and green hues. The whole of Paris stretches at my feet. The work is rich in colour and in detail, it radiates heat and light. A perfect gift, an ideal addition to any collection.

A row of Victorian houses, the pinnacle of English solidity, faces the sea at Clacton. The sky is blue, full of brine and ozone, a tinge of vinegar and frying chips. Seagulls sing and crow, and from the sea comes the gentle sound of waves. Childhood memories, Proustian triggers of colour and taste, happy innocence, infantile joy and freedom. I was struck by the colours of the houses, by their height and stature. Decades of history preserved in brick, of grandeur and fall.
