46115 Scots Guardsman was built as 6115 by the North British Locomotive Company of Glasgow in 1927. It was named Scots Guardsman in 1928 after the Scots Guards. After receiving smoke deflectors, it starred in the 1936 film Night Mail. It was the first of the rebuilt engines to receive smoke deflectors and the only one to run with them as an LMS engine. It was renumbered 46115 by British Railways in 1948 and was the last of the class in service from service at Carlisle Kingmoor depot in December 1965.

My son stood talking to this veteran who flew in Lancasters during The War and I thought it was great for him to meet someone who could recount living history to him and really bring this experience to life. This gentleman was probably not far off my son's age when he joined the RAF, a sobering thought.

This image comes from when I walked Wainwrights Coast To Coast back in 1998. Unlike most, I walked from East to West, saving the Lake District for last. At this point I had just crossed the boggy summit of Nine Standards Rigg, and was facing the Vale Of Eden near Kirkby Stephen. It had been a dry and partly cloudy day to the East of the peak, but ahead to the west shower after shower marched along the wide valley, rainbows appearing every few minutes. It looked like I would be running the gauntlet to cross the valley, but that was for the next day. Instead I had only to descend to Kirkby Stephen for the night. I originally painted this in 1998. This much improved version was painted in oil on 20x16 inch board in a recent repaint cover...

This painting is based on a photo I took back in March 1995, on a very snowy trip to the Vale Of Eden, which runs beside the Western escarpment of the Pennines. With the hills behind me I came to the ruins of Pendragon castle, just outside Kirkby Stephen. According to legend Pendragon Castle was built by Uther Pendragon (father of King Arthur), but as far as we know it was built in the 12th Century with later additions. It was made a ruin by an attack in 1541, and rebuilt in 1660, only to fall into disrepair by 1770 to become the ruin we see today. It is accessible to the public for free (or at least it was the last time I visited), and lies within the recently extended Yorkshire Dales National Park in the historic county of Westmorland...
