The Brittany Spaniel is not actually a spaniel! As a gun dog, its closer to a setter, but the AKC has started calling it just a "Brittany." These bird dogs are smart and eager to please.

This combination was to maximize strength and size but also balance the aggressive Bulldog with the more gentle Mastiff. Known as the Gamekeeper's Night Dog, they were reliable guards and are still used as guarding dogs to this day.
