In 1968, WIIN was a Top 40 format AM station in Atlanta, GA. During the early 1970s WIIN changed format to progressive rock under a new local owner. WIIN was, for a while, Atlanta's only progressive rock station and quickly became known for introducing new rock music to the Atlanta market. WIIN became an adult standards/easy listening station in the late 1970s. In the early 1980s, the station changed its call letters to WKLS and format to album rock, as a simulcast of 96.1 WKLS-FM (now WWPW). The simulcast lasted until 1988 when the station was sold.

The Mr. Swiss company was based in Oklahoma City, OK. The chain was started in 1964 by L.J. Doerfler and featured a diverse menu that included 34 soft-style ice cream flavors and 11 sandwiches ranging from a 25-cent hot dog or hamburger to a 69-cent corned beef and roast beef sandwich. TBS was originally established on December 17, 1976, as the national feed of Turner's Atlanta, Georgia, independent television station, WTCG. The decision to begin offering WTCG via satellite transmission to cable and satellite subscribers throughout the United States expanded the small station into the first nationally distributed "superstation." With the assignment of WTBS as the broadcast station's call letters in 1979, the national feed became known as SuperStation WTBS, and later SuperStation TBS, TBS Superstation, or simply TBS. The channel broadcast a variety of programming during this era, including films, syndicated series, and sports.
