There was a moment in 1970 when someone decided that what people really wanted was to have dinner served on huge wood planks while their waiter randomly sang songs to them. If you are thinking that is one of the most absurd ideas ever and that it was a total flop, you are half right. It was an absurd idea, but for some unknown reason, people loved it, and they came in droves, typically waiting 2-3 hours on Friday and Saturday nights. After opening up in on Wilshire Blvd. in Santa Monica, The Great American Food & Beverage Co. went on to open several locations, all serving generous portions of food on large planks. Every staff member had to be able to sing, dance, and play an instrument, so it was a great place for budding entertainers.
