Florence Cathedral In Watercolor is an art print I created using a traditional watercolor technique. The setting is what was called the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower (Italian: Cattedrale do Santa Maria del Fiore), but is now called Florence Cathedral. The perspective is from another part of the church looking down at the street with the dome towering above. The exterior architectural treatment makes this historic church very unique. A panoramic view of Florence, Italy. On the right, the cathedral church, the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo) – begun in 1059 and completed in 1128. Just right of centre, the Campanile di Giotto (Giotto’s Bell Tower) – begun in 1334 and completed in 1359. In front of the Campanile is the Badìa Fiorentina, the abbey and church of the Fraternity of Jerusalem. On the left, the Palazzo Vecchio (Italian for Old Palace), the town hall of Florence. This massive, Gothic, crenellated fortress-palace is among the most impressive town halls of Tuscany.

Il Duomo di Firenze, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style with the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi.[1] The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris. The cathedral complex, located in Piazza del Duomo, includes the Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile. These three buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the historic centre of Florence and are a major ...

I've been to Florence a few times now and am always impressed with the Duomo. The incredible white marble facades and the intricate patterning in various other shades of marble. And all topped off with the lovely terracotta dome

Florence's Duomo is the city's most iconic landmark. Capped by Filippo Brunelleschi's red-tiled cupola, it's a staggering construction whose breathtaking pink, white and green marble facade and graceful campanile (bell tower) dominate the medieval cityscape. Sienese architect Arnolfo di Cambio began work on it in 1296, but construction took almost 150 years and it wasn't consecrated until 1436. I took this photo on a visit there and gave it a painterly treatment in CC and Topaz.

The three magnificent buildings in the Piazza del Duomo in Florence, Italy. On the left, the Battistero di San Giovanni (Baptistery of St. John) - begun in 1296 and completed in 1436. On the right, the Campanile di Giotto (Giotto’s Bell Tower) - begun in 1334 and completed in 1359. In the centre, the cathedral church, the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo) - begun in 1059 and completed in 1128. The exterior walls of all three buildings are faced in alternate vertical and horizontal bands of polychrome marble from Carrara (white), Prato (green), Siena (red), Lavenza and a few other places.
