Description: Chaos theory is an area of scientific study focused on underlying patterns and laws of systems that are highly sensitive to initial conditions. The "butterfly effect" being an example of this. This equation, the Lyapunov exponent, measures the sensitivity to initial conditions. More specifically, given two starting trajectories in the phase space that are infinitesimally close, the two trajectories end up diverging at a rate given by this equation.
