Biblical scene, Wieliczka Salt Mine. Bas-relief carving in salt depicting the Wedding at Cana story from the Christian bible, where Jesus (left) turned water into wine. This carving, in the chapel of Saint Kinga, in the Wieliczka Salt Mine, was done in the period 1927-1963 by the miner and sculptor Antoni Wyrodek. The salt mine at Wieliczka, Poland, is one of the oldest in the world. It was started in the 13th century and is still in use in the 21st century. By the 19th century, vast underground caverns had been excavated to depths of several hundred metres, including statues sculpted out of the salt deposits. In 1978, the mine became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The buildings are numbered and identified by function in the legend at right. Examples include the meeting house, workshops, schools, hospital, granary, barns, stables, blacksmith's forge, and an aqueduct (crooked line). The Shakers, religious dissenters, arrived in New York from England in 1774. They established more than twenty communities similar to this one, aiming to create settlements set apart from what they perceived as the chaos and disorder of American life. Part of an inscription* on a magical ceramic bowl that resides in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The bowl originates from Iran, dating from between 400 and 700 AD. The inscription is an incantation for good luck made in ink on an unglazed pottery bowl and is in Mandaic, a language relating to Aramaic. A full translation was not on display, however a couple of lines were translated as to reading: ‘In the name of Life! Health be to him… Life is victorious over all magic.’ *Some of the characters were unclear or missing, and the design had unequal numbers of lines of text in each segment, so I altered it to make the design more aesthetically pleasing. This (probably) hasn’t inadvertently changed the good luck spell into a bad luck...

Phoenician alphabet (more specifically, an abjad) known in modern times from the Canaanite and Aramaic inscriptions found across the Mediterranean region. The name comes from the Phoenician civilization. Like Hebrew and Arabic, Phoenician was written from right to left, and vowels were omitted.
