Description: Founded in 1863, Pacific Lumber Company, known as PALCO, was one of California's major logging and sawmill operations, located 28 miles south of Eureka and 244 miles north of San Francisco. Primary operations existed in massive log storage and milling operations in the historic company town of Scotia, California, located adjacent to US 101 along the Eel River, with secondary mills located in Fortuna and Carlotta. PALCO had extensive timber holdings exceeding well over 200,000 acres in the Redwood and Douglas-Fir forests of Humboldt County. Known as the Redwood Empire, for generations, PALCO was one of the largest private employers in the region, and operated the world's largest Redwood Mill ever constructed.
Description: The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (often referred to as the Milwaukee Road) (reporting mark MILW), was a Class I railroad that operated in the Midwest and Northwest of the United States from 1847 until 1980, when its Pacific Extension (Montana, Idaho, and Washington) was abandoned following a bankruptcy. Around this time, the company went through several official names and faced bankruptcy on multiple occasions. The eastern half of the system merged into the Soo Line Railroad thirty-two years ago on January 1, 1986, a subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Railway (reporting mark CP). Description: The Yellowstone Park branch line was first completed in 1883 by the Northern Pacific Railway. The line ended at Cinnabar station, 3 miles north of Gardiner. The line was marketed as the first railroad line to a national park. The line was extended to Gardiner in June 1902. Cinnabar was abandoned and became a ghost town after operations shifted to Gardiner.
Description: The Yosemite Valley Railroad (YVRR) was a short-line railroad that operated in California from 1907 to 1945, providing a new mode of travel and tourism for the region. It ran from Merced to the Yosemite National Park, but it did not extend to Yosemite Valley itself, as railroad construction was prohibited in the National Parks. Tourists would disembark at the park boundary in El Portal, California and stay overnight at the Hotel Del Portal before taking a stagecoach to Yosemite Valley.
