They were named for the abundant California sea lion and harbor seal populations in the Bay Area. The 1909, 1922, 1925, and 1928 Seals were recognized as being among the 100 greatest minor league teams of all time.

Essentially a World's Fair, the expo was a celebration of both the completion of the Panama Canal and the 400th anniversary of Balboa's discovery of the Pacific Ocean. It also helped showcase the city's recovery from the earthquake of 1906.

Based in Daly City, California, the team played its home games in the Cow Palace. The 1977–78 team compiled a 24-17-1 record, and won the Pacific Hockey League championship.
