Description: "Power to the people" is a cultural expression and political slogan that has been used in a wide variety of contexts. During the 1960s in the United States, young people began speaking and writing this phrase as a form of rebellion against what they perceived as the oppression by the older generation, especially The Establishment. The Black Panthers used the slogan "All Power to the People" to protest the rich, ruling class domination of society. Pro-democracy students used it to protest America's military campaign in Vietnam.

Description: The slogan became popular after the execution of Stjepan Filipović, a Yugoslav Partisan. As the rope was put around his neck on 22 May 1942, Filipović defiantly thrust his hands out and denounced the Germans and their Axis allies as murderers, shouting "Death to fascism, freedom to the people!".
Description: Founded in October of 1966 in Oakland, California by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, the Black Panther Party for Self Defense (BPP) became the most famous black power organization of the late 1960s. Newton and Seale met in 1965 at Merritt College where they were exposed to a burgeoning wave of Black Nationalism, inspired in part by the Afro-American Association, established by Don Warden at the University of California, Berkeley in 1962. The raised fist remains a key part of their symbology, though it’s also evolved to be a symbol of standing up against the man for groups and causes of all races, so whether you’ve got a political cause in mind or are just into power fisting, this one is for you!

Description: The federal government began toying with free breakfast for underprivileged children in 1966, but in 1969, there still wasn't free breakfast and kids were going to school hungry. In Oakland, the Black Panthers jumped into action, organizing their own free breakfast program. Formally called the Free Breakfast for School Children Program, the program expanded beyond breakfast to provide free groceries to those in need, utilizing the same donor network that got the breakfast program up and running. People's Free Food Program design comes from the posters used at the breakfast locations, on community free grocery bags, and the shirts many volunteers wore.
