Description: The Summer of Love was a social phenomenon that occurred during the summer of 1967, when as many as 100,000 people, mostly young people sporting hippie fashions of dress and behavior, converged in San Francisco's neighborhood of Haight-Ashbury. More broadly, the Summer of Love encompassed hippie music, hallucinogenic drugs, anti-war sentiments, and a wild free-love scene throughout the West Coast of the United States, and as far away as New York City. Hippies, sometimes called flower children, were an eclectic group. Many were suspicious of the government, rejected consumerist values, and opposed the Vietnam War. A few were interested in politics; others were concerned more with art or spiritual and meditative practices.

Description: In the mid-60s, young people flocked to San Francisco's Haight and Ashbury neighborhood, attracted by the area's cheap rent. In 1965, the first hippie boutique opened at 1510 Haight Street in the Doolan-Larson Building. The storefront here was owned by a 24-year-old young woman named Peggy Caserta who named her place Mnasidika, a reference to the first known lesbians in written history (see The Songs of Bilitis by Pierre Louÿs). Among her friends and customers were counterculture artists and musicians, most of whom would go on to be big names, but all bought their jeans, tees, and other fashion essentials from her little neighborhood storefront. Mnasidika closed after the Summer of Love in 1968, but the space as it was remains today.

Description: Buffalo Springfield was a rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1966, taking their name from an old Buffalo Springfield steamroller parked outside their house. The group, widely known for the song 'For What It's Worth,' which became a US top 10 hit and a counterculture anthem, released three albums and several singles between 1966 and 1968. Their music combined elements of folk and country with British Invasion and psychedelic rock influences. They were key to the early development of folk rock. Their second album, Buffalo Springfield Again, marked their progression to psychedelia and hard rock. After several drug arrests and line-up changes, the group disbanded in 1968, and their final album, Last Time Around, was released post dissolution.
