Flying high above us is the frigate bird, going weeks without dropping. Celebrate this wonderful bird!

Frigate Birds (fregata magnificens) are a family of seabirds called Fregatidae which are found across all tropical and subtropical oceans. The five extant species are classified in a single genus, Fregata. All have predominantly black plumage, long, deeply forked tails and long hooked bills. Females have white underbellies and males have a distinctive red gular pouch, which they inflate during the breeding season to attract females. Their wings are long and pointed and can span up to 2.3 metres (7.5 ft), the largest wing area to body weight ratio of any bird. As well as along the Pacific coast of the Americas from Mexico to Ecuador, including the Galápagos Islands.

A Laysan albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) IUCN Vulnerable, taking off from a breeding beach in the remote French Frigate Shoals. Before breeding at age five the birds may spend years out at sea. The Northwest Hawaiian Islands are home to almost the entire world population of this species. They are carefully protected, but the threat from plastic pollution (which the birds mistake for cephalopods and eat to feed their young) and long line fishing means that there is long term concern for this species.

This bubbling young pirate is the chick of a frigate bird, the pirate birds of the sky. He will grow up to be magnificent, but for now he just looks a bit silly. We met him, and many others of these goofy birds on Genovesa, bird island of the Galapagos.
