In maritime and naval history, USS Monitor was the first ironclad warship. She saw action in the American Civil War at the naval Battle of Hampton Roads. She became the basis of armored steam-powered warships in the Navy for several decades.

During the Persian Gulf War's Operation Desert Storm, Comfort received a call to activate for Desert Shield/Desert Storm 9 August 1990 and departed Baltimore 11 August. Comfort was positioned in proximity to Kuwait, just off the coast of Saudi Arabia near Khafji. On 12 March 1991, Comfort was under way on her return trip home. She arrived in Baltimore on 15 April 1991. While deployed, Comfort traveled more than 30,000 nautical miles (35,000 mi; 56,000 km) and consumed almost 3 million U.S. gallons (2,500,000 imp gal; 11,000,000 L) of fuel. More than 8,000 outpatients were seen, and 700 inpatients were admitted including four sailors injured in a high-pressure steam leak on USS Iwo Jima. 337 surgical procedures were performed.

The Command Ship

The USS America/CVW-1 team was the only carrier battle group to launch strikes in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm from both the Red Sea and Persian Gulf. With America's decommissioning in August 1996, the air wing joined the USS George Washington battle group. CVW-1 and USS George Washington returned on 3 April 1998 from their first deployment in their 2-year association. Following their deployment with USS George Washington, CVW-1 returned to USS John F. Kennedy after a 24-year absence, and then deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf.

This Vietnam-era design features a groovy ghoulie Navy pilot leaving the flight deck with his guns blazing in a Douglas A-4 Skyhawk. Called the “Tinker Toy” because of its diminutive size, the little A-4 actually bore the brunt of Naval Aviation’s strike effort during the Vietnam War, including Marine pilots providing close air support of the 1st Marine Division as they first waded ashore at Da Nang in 1965.

HMS Belfast moored as a museum ship on the River Thames in London. This Town-class light cruiser was built for the Royal Navy by Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast and launched in 1938 on St Patrick's day. She served in the Second World War and the Korean War before entering reserve in 1963.

Jeepneys, sometimes called simply jeeps, are buses and the most popular means of public transportation ubiquitous in the Philippines. They are known for their crowded vis-à-vis seating and kitsch decorations, which have become a widespread symbol of Philippine culture and art. A Sarao jeepney was exhibited at the Philippine pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair as a national image for the Filipinos. Jeepneys were originally made from U.S. military jeeps left over from World War II.

Another heroic branch of the US Navy during WW2. These Motor Patrol Torpedo Boats or "PT boats" served the US during the war with courage and valor. Even former President John F. Kennedy was Capt. of a PT boat during the war.

The final coat of paint has been applied to a new version of a World War I ‘dazzle ship’ on the Liverpool waterfront. The dazzle technique was used in WWI to confuse enemy ships and U-boats as to the manoeuvres of Allied vessels. It was great to be able to walk down and see her today as part of the Mersey River Festival and WW1 commemorations taking place on the waterfront. Comfort was ordered to activate on 26 December 2002, and set sail for the U.S. Central Command area of operations on 6 January 2003. After stopping in Diego Garcia to embark additional medical personnel flown in from the National Naval Medical Center, the ship proceeded to the Persian Gulf to serve as an afloat trauma center in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Comfort remained in the Persian Gulf for 56 days providing expert medical care to wounded U.S. military personnel as well as injured Iraqi civilians and enemy prisoners of war.
