North Wilkesboro Speedway is a short oval racetrack located on Route 421, 80 miles north of Charlotte. The speedway opened its doors on May 18, 1947, as a dirt track with the first official event promoted as a modified race.

What is now known as "STP" was invented by German scientists during WWII as a response to Germany's need for lubrication of the German war-machine vehicles. WWII US Army divisions in Africa that overtook German Afrika Korps vehicles alleged that the Germans employed an engine oil that is now known as STP formulation full-strength in their air-cooled 4-cylinder engines, which successfully traveled through the hot African Desert war-front without seizing due to friction and extreme heat. How the Germans' original chemical synthesis formulation found its way to the U.S. after WWII is not known, but most likely it made that journey along with many of the other German innovations through the distribution of technology through the spoils of war.

Hurst Performance floor-shifters were skillfully engineered, reliable and stirring in appearance, plus, their marketing was in tune with the times, catering to the flourishing muscle car movement of the 1960s. Their shifters infiltrated the drag racing, stock car racing, off-road racing and many other areas of motorsports.

While an attendance of about 3,000 people was expected, a crowd in excess of 10,000 showed up to see one of the famous Flock brothers compete (and ultimately win the race). The track is just 5/8 of a mile around and features a unique uphill backstretch and downhill frontstretch that played into it's reputation as one of the fastest short-tracks of the '40s and '50s. The original dirt oval was paved in 1957 and continued to operate until the track's closure in 1996.

Westboro Speedway was built by five World War II vets on 35 acres of former farmland in Westborough, Massachusetts. The track started out hosting midget racing, but eventually full size stock car racing became the track's primary focus. In addition to motorsports, Westboro Speedway also hosted countless rock concerts over the years. Like most racetracks, what was once a rural location was eventually surrounded by suburban sprawl that didn't take kindly to the raucous activities that went on there. That, coupled with the land being worth more to developers saw the track close its doors for good in 1985.

Super Stock & Drag Illustrated was founded by John "Monk" Reynolds, publisher of Eastern Drag News and owner of Pennsylvania's US30 drag strip. The first issue was November 1964 and the magazine published continuously until June 1996 when it was re-titled 'Drag Racing' and only made it a few more years until a final issue in March 1999. The magazine was a thoughtful mix of drag racing coverage, tech articles, and street machines, which gave it pretty diverse appeal to gear heads of all sorts.

During Prohibition, moonshine production skyrocketed. The spirits were made under the light of the moon, in hopes that no one would detect smoke from the stills, a practice that earned the booze its name moonshine. These distilleries used runners who could smuggle moonshine from the stills to customers across the region. On the outside, the runner cars looked stock to avoid attention, but on the inside high-powered engines and heavy-duty suspensions that would give them the edge in outrunning law enforcement. These runners and their souped up cars would eventually be raced and lead to what we all know as modern stock car racing today. This Moonshine Express design comes from the '70s, when a moonshine running experienced a resurgence.

This World War II era airfield was located ten miles north of Green Cove Springs off of U. S. Highway 17 opened up in 1960. Drag races were held on the northern east-west asphalt runway of the Fleming Island Naval Outer Landing Field and was named after the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft that flew out of the base. The track was back-lit by two big WWII surplus searchlights that would go from idle to full light when the cars staged. Starting was by a liberated traffic light hanging across the track, so no Chrondek type tree here. Races were first every Sunday, but later in 1961, changed to the first and third Sunday.

Hurst Drag Racing Shifters

In the early 20th century, drivers came to prove their prowess in Daytona Beach and several land speed records were set in the process. This eventually led to some loosely organized races, though the first “official” race on Daytona Beach took place in 1936. The track ran due south for two miles on A1A, which runs parallel to the ocean. Drivers then accessed the beach at the South Turn, went two miles on the hard-packed beach surface, and turned away from the beach at the North Turn (now the location of a great restaurant). It sounds crazy to hold stock car racing events on the beach nowadays, but for about two decades, it was THE place to race if you were an up-and-coming racer wanting to rub wheels with the big boys.
