The chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina) is a species of American sparrow, a passerine bird in the family Passerellidae. Originally of open pine woods and edges, it has adapted well to altered landscapes. It is a small gray-breasted songbird with a slightly notched tail, a black line through the eye, a white line above it and --during the breeding season-- a distinctive reddish cap. It molts twice a year. In its breeding plumage, it has orangish-rust upper parts, gray head and underparts and a distinctive reddish cap.
