I've faced this beast across the table from me and lived to tell the tale.

The Katzenklavier was a (supposedly) theoretical organ or piano that hammered cats instead of strings, producing a "katzenjammer," the delightful German word for the raucous noise made by a group of cats (hence the comic strip from the turn of the last century by Rudolph Dirks about two mischievous boys). I've turned the table on those imps, conceptualizing my own katzenklavier performed by the immortal Felix the Cat.

Make a statement with this reproduction of Milton Glaser's hand-drawn title for the Signet Edition of George Orwell's prescient classic. I had this edition as a kid, and always loved the hand-lettered bubbly font, which belied the story within.

Wanted a CAN shirt but the offerings were simply copied from LP jackets or just a 70s-looking font. So I decided to make my own. Original idea was to make it look like Roger Dean's YES logo, which would be funny only to me; besides it wasn't quite working. This streamlined, more machine-like logo was the result.

The cool design by KCAI's John Baker was the Kansas City seal from 1970-1992. It was nicknamed the paperclip, but if look carefully you'll see four interlocking hearts, symbolizing KC's location between North & South, East and West ... the "Heart of America." It is in my opinion a masterwork of subtle but meaningful design. It is still found on manhole covers, bits of infrastructure, signage, and decorative iron and stonework around the city.

Y is for Yeti, or the Abominable Snowman as we call him here in the West, is a cousin to North America's Bigfoot, in that he's a hulking, hairy primate that tromps arounds piedmont forests and whose evidence for existence is anecdotal sitings and plaster casts of his enormous footprints.

U is for Umi-nyōbō, a Japanese yökai, or supernatural creature, who lives in the ocean and steals fish.

M is for Manticore, a terrifying beast with the body of a lion, the head of a man, and the tail of a scorpion, who roamed the wilds of ancient Persia. The Manticore had a taste for human flesh, which he masticated with his rows of razor sharp teeth.

V is for Valravn, a raven from Danish mythology (and sometimes raven-wolf hybrid) who has an appetite for the hearts of generals slain in battle.

Late at night, watching campfire embers drift off into the deep starry sky, I sense him out there, watching and waiting with his retinue of winged and scurrying friends. Mangrove colonies in coastal waters are under severe strain from human development and waste, along with climate change. This stylized mangrove medallion was made in honor of their beauty and importance.
