Description: After returning to America in the 1950s from living abroad, Stephen Crane opened The Luau, a Polynesian-themed restaurant on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Quickly becoming a celebrity hotspot, the Luau was known for its innovative tiki decor and its high-profile customers. As the host and owner, Crane became a well-known name in the restaurant industry and tongue in cheek signed his menus as "STEFOOMA, High-Talking Chief of the Luau" in an attempt to keep up with the storied personas of Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic. Crane expanded his company, Stephen Crane Associates, which at one point included over a dozen different restaurants.

Description: A tiki bar is a themed drinking establishment that serves elaborate cocktails, especially rum-based mixed drinks such as the Mai Tai and Zombie cocktails. Tiki bars are aesthetically defined by their tiki culture décor which is based upon a romanticized conception of tropical cultures, most commonly Polynesian. Some bars also incorporate general nautical themes or retro elements from the early atomic age
Description: A whole generation of folks probably know Betty Jane Tavern just from the t-shirt worn by camp counselor Gary in the 2001 satirical comedy film, Wet Hot American Summer, but it was an actual place. Betty Jane Tavern existed in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, home of the largest freshwater lake in the state, covering about 4 square miles in area. Playing off the heavy influence of the Lenni Lenape tribe of the area, Betty Jane Tavern advertised having the 'best firewater in Lake Hopatcong.' Whether you were looking for a stiff drink or a hot meal, Betty Jane was there for you throughout the '70s and '80s.

Description: Located in Tucson, Arizona, The Buffet Bar & Crock Pot has a fascinating name and a long, storied history beginning just after prohibition in 1934. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but then it’s not supposed to as it's one of coolest dive bars in the country where the drinks are stiff and won't set you back much.
Description: Mac's Famous Bar was a Daytona Beach institution for decades, playing host to everyone from beachgoers and local drunks to race car drivers and bike week attendees. Their prime location right off the beach made them a natural spot for folks to gather after a day at the beach or even during, as Mac's was also a full-service package store selling liquor and beer to go. They were also a spot for the hardcore drinkers, opening at 6 am and offering free bloody marys to anyone who was there when they opened the door. In the early days of racing at Daytona International Speedway, you'd find many of the drivers here after a race (and sometimes before) knocking back a few beers.
Description: Often described as the gay Cheers, Little Jim’s was the first gay bar in Boystown when it opened in 1975, making it the second-oldest gay bar in Chicago. In the early days, the bar had darkened windows to protect the safety of its customers. Within a few years of opening, more gay bars followed Little Jim's lead into the neighborhood. The divey, late-night spot became both a Boystown institution and one of the longest-running independently owned bars in the Chicago. A big part of the bar's legacy is that it was the first and only bar on Halsted Street to be fully integrated. Black, white, and Hispanic people all mingled and socialized there – literally everyone was welcome.
Description: The Pterodactyl Club opened in the mid-'80s in Charlotte, North Carolina as an alternative dance hall with a DJ spinning all the greatest non-mainstream music. Housed in an old steakhouse with 40 year old carpet on Freedom Drive, Pterodactyl Club had one of the smallest bars of any club, which made getting a drink a challenge. Within the first year, The Pterodactyl began featuring live bands and quickly became the go to spot to catch the coolest bands. From punk and hardcore to goth and metal and everything in between, this Charlotte nightspot hosted countless big name acts before they made it big.
Description: The old building on Chinden Boulevard was relocated to Garden City, Idaho, from New Plymouth in 1949, and The Ranch Club opened its doors the following year. It was the only bar in town with slot machines, that is, until gambling was banned in Idaho in 1953. A few years after that, the owner commissioned a giant palomino with a cowboy and lasso to stand atop the bar's sign. At some point, the cowboy was ripped off in a storm, and eventually, the horse was replaced as people kept trying to climb up and sit on the saddle. The new palomino has stood strong ever since and has remained a landmark of the rowdy cowboy bar, even during the years spent as a gay bar.

Description: First opening their doors in 1999, Burt's Tiki Lounge combined a dark, moody vibe with a serious bric-a-brac fetish, eclectic live music, and tropical drinks to create a bizarre oasis in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Countless acts performed at Burt's and it even made a couple of appearances on Breaking Bad. It was a true southwestern original with few contemporaries, but sadly, Burt's folded after 17 years not too long after moving to a new location which failed to capture the beloved dive bar tiki vibe of the original.

Description: The Yardarm Pub & Broiler is truly a classic dive bar and was first opened way back in 1972. It was known for its dark interior, pool tables, laminated wood topped tables, and an authentic 1970s vibe which is probably because it was new in the 70s and they never changed anything. Unlike most dive bars, Yardarm became a community hang out and hosted weddings, funerals, birthdays, retirements, fundraisers for the community, and more over the years. It wasn't uncommon to find the SeaFair Pirates “warming up” at the funky pirate-themed pub before the annual Waterland Parade, with the iconic Moby Duck parked outside. Sadly, The Yardarm set sail for good in May of 2019 and won't be coming back to port anytime soon.
