Fall Trees Cards
Description: The venerable Humpback Bridge lays claim to being the oldest of Virginia's remaining covered bridges. Located in Alleghany County, just west of Covington, it was built in 1857. It was part of the James River and Kanawha Turnpike and succeeds three other bridges at the site. It stretches over Dunlap Creek, a tributary of the Jackson River that joins the Cowpasture River near Iron Gate to form the James River.
Description: Along an Autumn Path through the Birches, watercolor batik and digital painting by Conni Schaftenaar The base painting is a watercolor batik on ginwashi rice paper. I digitally added some leaves, did some selective blurring, and created more light in the center of the painting than I had managed to retain in the original (sigh).

Description: Autumn Aspens Watercolor on paper, by Conni Schaftenaar This is a quick work I had done several years ago to practice using a sharp edge (palette knife, edge of a credit card, etc.) to scrape into wet-into-wet color blends to pull out the color, creating the white tree trunks and branches. After all was dry, some colorful leaves were applied, as these aspens are just beginning the change into lovely fall color!
