Description: Fred Hampton was a brilliant and fearless leader who fought passionately for the freedom and equality of Black people in the United States. As a member of the Black Panther Party, he stood out for his ability to unite different communities against racial and social oppression. His revolutionary vision and charisma made him a prominent figure, feared by the authorities. In 1969, at just 21 years old, Hampton was brutally murdered by the FBI and the Chicago police in a cowardly act meant to silence his fight. However, his death did not erase his legacy, which continues to live on in the battle against injustice.
Description: The Black Panther Party fought against police brutality, promoted activism that organized, educated and fed their community while being mercilessly hunted by the FBI. While this history might be new to many, it isn’t to the activists who have inherited many aspects of their work from the Panthers: their socialist ideals and focus on grassroots organizing. On a larger scale, some of the ideas that the Black Panthers espoused—including prison abolition—have begun making their way into mainstream discourse. UNITE!
